A recommendation series coming to you straight from members of team MONO, featuring the restaurants that they think are worth stopping by this month, old or new. Whether it’s because there is a new menu to check out or it has been all over their feed for the last week, this series will feature the team’s personal dining picks of the month and why they think you should add it to your list too.

TWO OLD MAN RAMEN

This yatai-inspired ramen shop right at the entrance of Central Market is exactly what its name suggests: Two Old Man Ramen, run by a Japanese chef and his brother. There’s something especially nice about coming here at night when the heat of the day has finally eased and the lanterns of the stall illuminate the space in a warm glow. The menu keeps things simple: ramen, a few sides and an icy kakigori to help beat the heat. In short, it is a Japanese version of that familiar, comforting roadside stall that you’ll always return to.

MONK

Not every pick this month has to be a full meal. Sometimes it’s the place you go after dinner, or the one you plan a whole afternoon around. For me, that’s Monk. Three flights up in SS15, this 10-seat listening bar is named after Thelonious Monk and the team takes that seriously.

The walls are sound-treated, the music isn’t up for requests but rest assured the team behind the counter know the story behind every record they play. Ask about what’s spinning and you’ll get an answer worth hearing. While Jazz is the anchor, the programme goes much further. Order a coffee and a dessert, settle into one of the armchairs and let someone else choose the soundtrack for an hour or two.

Taste of Love 爱の味

Taste of Love has been at the top of our list ever since the nine-year-old restaurant has relocated to a standalone heritage venue in Kampung Attap. Originally a neighbourhood secret tucked away inside an old apartment block, the independent bistro is run by founders Tim and Lulu, who operate under the philosophy that "love can also be a flavor". Specialising in Asian fusion comfort food, with culinary influences spanning Taiwan, Thailand, and local flavors, the kitchen features signature items like their basil pork noodles with chili-ginger century eggs and otak-otak spaghetti. It remains a hidden, vintage sanctuary well worth the visit for its affordable and comforting bites. –Mindy Kee, writer

UNWINED PLUS

No fuss, no frills, just flavour and pours. We recently popped over to Unwined Plus for a taste of its new menu and it’s been on my mind ever since. For a place to linger on my palate for weeks, it must be good and I would be remiss to not spread the small plates and natural wine joy. This edition of its menu sees creative, Thai-inspired dishes coming out of the kitchen and my personal favourite has to be its larb beef tartare.

TWO HANDS NOODLE SHOP

Anything by the Table & Apron team is always worth trying and Two Hands Noodle Shop has been at the top of my list ever since it quietly surfaced in the Damansara Kim neighbourhood, just a stone’s throw away from its elder sisters. Specialising in biang biang noodles and other regional Chinese staples, the walk-ins only pop-up has no official end date yet, but its Instagram bio points towards an end of October closure. With that being said, we think you’d better hurry over before it’s all too late for its very affordable and highly praised bites!
