There’s always a new dessert just when you think you’ve tried them all. This one is from Korea, the trendsetter of all trendsetters, so going viral was pretty much guaranteed. If you haven’t met butter tteok yet, think of it as the lovechild of mochi and a freshly baked butter cake. It’s golden and crisp on the outside with caramelised edges, then dense and chewy in the middle, and you’ll be reaching for a second one before you’ve finished the first.

SIRU

As the very first Korean rice cake dessert specialty shop in KL, they don’t just make tteok, they understand it inside out. Displaying a sprawling array of different traditional and modern tteok, this contemporary space treats the humble rice cake with the finesse of a high-end pastry kitchen. If you want a plate that skips the guesswork, Siru is a spot that feels like they brought the blueprint with them.

65°C ONDO

Known for their mastery of temperature and texture (it’s in the name, after all), 65°C Ondo approaches the butter tteok with the same commitment when you’re making excuses to skip the gym. While they started as a singular neighborhood favorite, this bakery has expanded its empire across multiple outlets, spreading its signature soft buns, burnt cheesecakes, and fluffy croissants across the city. They lean into the dairy quality here, ensuring the butter is rich, fragrant, and perfectly absorbed by the rice cake rather than just sitting on top.

CAKE JALAN TIUNG

Leave Shah Alam out of a pastry conversation and you’re missing out. Cake Jalan Tiung has been baking in a quiet corner of Seksyen 4 for about a decade, and it has become a go-to for good bakes with clever flavours. Its butter tteok fits right in: comforting, honest and clearly made with care.

LOCUS

Locus is the 16-seat sister to Provisions, tucked just behind them in Damansara Jaya. The menu changes regularly and most nights it’s sharing plates and wine around a long black counter. Its butter tteok is made with sourdough, which gives it a slight tang and more depth than the usual version, with a crisp, golden crust and a chewy middle. It’s a good one to try if the sweeter ones have started to blur together. Also available a few doors down at Provisions.

AIFOKATO

AiFOKATO opened its first Malaysian outlet at The Exchange TRX earlier this month. Most people come for the Korean-style affogato, which you build by picking a diamond-shaped scoop of gelato and a hot pour. Don’t leave without the butter tteok, though. It’s properly crispy on the outside without being overly chewy or sweet and it’s one of the best we’ve had in a while. A box comes with four flavours, so bring someone to share with, or don’t.
