There’s no shortage of ways to cool down around KL and PJ, but we’ll always have a soft spot for gelato. From homegrown makers turning Malaysian flavours into creamy scoops to Italian names doing what they do best, these are nine spots worth making room for in your dessert rotation.
1.
TUG GELATO
Giving imperfect produce a very delicious second life.
TUG Gelato — short for The Unusual Greens — turns surplus and imperfect produce into gelato, giving ingredients that might otherwise go to waste a second life. Its flavours range from French vanilla and strawberry cheesecake to more unexpected combinations such as soursop and avocado pistachio. The Bangsar flagship is open until midnight, so it’s one to keep in mind when your gelato craving arrives well after dinner.
2.
GELULU GELATO
Gelato with a side of nostalgia.
Gelulu Gelato keeps things playful with a menu that looks beyond the usual chocolate, vanilla and pistachio rotation. Its flavours have included Thai tea, Milo, gula Melaka sticky rice and even assam laksa, giving the humble scoop a distinctly Southeast Asian personality. The Chinatown shop stays open until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays, making it a particularly handy stop for late-night dessert runs.

OR GELATO
Come for the gelato, stay for the late-night scoop.
OrGelato takes an ingredient-first approach, making its gelato from scratch with ingredients such as whole pistachios, Madagascar vanilla and Valrhona chocolate. The result is dense, silky gelato alongside vegan sorbets, with handmade brown sugar waffle cones available for a little extra crunch. Its Mont Kiara shop is also open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, making it a solid option for a post-dinner craving.

4.
TAFFY GELATO
Why stop at a cone when there are croissants involved?
Taffy Gelato is for those who believe gelato can — and should — be the main event. Its selection ranges from familiar favourites to Malaysian-inspired flavours, while scoops can be served in croissants, brioche buns or atop Belgian waffles. In other words, come for one scoop and leave with a dessert that has somehow become a full meal.
5.
WAKA WAKA GELATO
Your neighbourhood gelato run starts here.
Waka Waka Gelato brings traditional gelato-making techniques together with flavours inspired by both Italy and Malaysia, including roasted pistachio, pulut tai tai and salted gula Melaka. The Sea Park shop also serves waffles, cakes and drinks when one scoop simply doesn’t quite cut it. It’s the sort of neighbourhood spot that makes an impromptu dessert run feel like a perfectly reasonable plan.

6.
VENCHI
The Italian chocolatier brings its long-running chocolate-making tradition to its gelato counter, with flavours spanning rich chocolate and hazelnut combinations alongside lighter fruit-forward sorbets. Of course, you could stop at one scoop, but pairing it with something from Venchi’s chocolate selection feels like the more appropriate way to do things. Its KL boutiques are conveniently located in some of the city’s major shopping destinations, making this an easy dessert detour.
7.
PICOLLI LOTTI
Piccoli Lotti takes its name from the Italian phrase for “small batches”, with its gelato made fresh in limited quantities and a selection that changes with the seasons. Alongside Italian classics like pistachio, expect Malaysian-inspired flavours such as Pulut Tai Tai, made with santan, kaya and pulut rice bits. The brand has also expanded across the Klang Valley, so there’s likely a scoop of Piccoli Lotti closer than you think.
8.
WHIMSICAL GELATO
Whimsical Gelato takes a playful approach to the classic Italian dessert, with a rotating menu that moves between familiar flavours and distinctly Malaysian combinations. Its signature creations include the pandan-infused Vanilla of the East, finished with gula Melaka and basil seeds, while seasonal specials give you another reason to return. Find it at The Waterfront in Desa ParkCity for a leisurely afternoon scoop.
